Did you see us? Saturday, Kapeli Candles made it to the local news! 13WMAZ was doing a piece on new local businesses that have opened up here on Main Street in Byron, GA. Neither Cindi nor I even like having our picture taken so we were pretty darn nervous (scared to death lol). We had an awesome first week last week and are absolutely loving it. It's wonderful to have this store to share with all of you the hard work we put in to our candles. So many of our specialty candles felt like a waste of time since we couldn't share them with our customers. We could take pictures and put them on our site, but pictures of most of the specialty candles just doesn't do them justice at all. We hope all of you are enjoying the ability to stop by and shop at the new store!

On Monday June 18th, 2007 we'll be opening the door of our brand new store located at 108 Main Street in Byron, GA. We're sharing a small house with the owner of The Decorator's Attic. We just know that all of our local regular customers are going to be as THRILLED as we are with this new place. You'll now be able to come by and shop Monday through Saturday's! There will be everything imaginable for scenting and decorating your home!

We have new labels now, professionally made labels! We can't begin to tell you how excited we are about something so seemingly simple! Might not sound like a big deal to some..... but it's a big deal to us and we couldn't be more proud.

Because of our new labels, we've also been working on a bit of a new look. If you're one of our regular customers you'll notice that the logo banner at the top has changed.

How to care for your candles... things you may not know!

We all love candles, but did you know there are proper ways to burn and care for them? Read the instructions below and find out how to properly care for your jar candles, pillar candles, tarts, and votive candles. These instructions can help you to enjoy your highly scented, hand poured candles even more.

Remember that candles can be dangerous.

Never leave a candle unattended and use caution around children and pets.

Candles Have Memories ~ The first time you burn your scented jar candle, or other type of container candle, be sure to allow the melt pool to reach the sides of the container. This typically takes an hour for every inch in diameter the candle is. Doing this will help ensure that the jar candle doesn't leave wax along the sides of the container and that it will burn evenly.
Smooth Burning for Pillar Candles ~ As your pillar candle burns down, curl the edges inward and upward toward the wick (this is known as hugging). This will help your candle burn more smoothly and evenly.

Trim your Wicks before Burning ~ To reduce smoking and uneven burning, be sure to trim the wicks before you light the candle each and every time. Wicks should be kept between 1/8" and 1/4" from the candle's surface. ALL (even soy candles!) candles will smoke if the wick gets too long!

Candles and Drafts ~ Keep the candles in your home away from drafts to prevent uneven burning and smoking, which can lead to soot deposits and reduce the overall burn time of the candle.

Burning Time ~ Never leave a candle burning longer than 3 to 4 hours. After that amount of time you should always extinguish the candle, allow the wax to completely cool, and trim the wick before lighting again. Failure to do so can be dangerous. Please, burn your candles wisely and carefully!

Keeping the Wick from Smoking ~ To keep your candle wick from smoking when you blow it out, simply bend the lit wick into the melted wax to extinguish it. Wick Dippers are awesome little tools for doing this!

Container and Pillar Candle Decorations ~ It's best to remove any bows, ribbons, beads, raffia, or other items that may be used to decorate your container or pillar candle. These items could cause a fire if left on the candle. Always be careful where you burn your candles in your home!

Moving a Container Candle ~ Please use caution when moving a container candle that is hot. It's best to not move them until they've cooled down. Even when using a candle warmer, caution should be used when moving your hot scented jar candles.

Votives ~ Votives can completely liquefy, so be sure to only burn them in tight fitting votive holders.

Keep the Candle Melt Pool Clean ~ Be sure to keep the melt pool area clean by never dropping matches there, and by cleaning any debris left from trimming the wick.

Time for a New Candle ~ It's time for a new hand poured candle when the wax in your container candle gets down to a 1/2" to a 1/4" of wax. Always leave at least 1/4" of unburned candle at the bottom of the container! This can prevent the jar candle or other type of glass container from cracking and causing the hot wax to leak out.

Tart Melts/Wax Melts ~ Always melt your tarts in approved low heat tart warmer/melters, or in an approved container on a candle warmer! Never add water to your tarts! Do not heat on a stove or an electric appliance that can exceed temperatures of 190 degrees F.

Candle Warmers ~ Candle warmers are a wonderful way to enjoy scented jar candles without a flame. They can also be used for your tarts as long as you use a heat resistant jar, or other type of container. Coffee cups/mugs work great too.

Electric Tart Burners ~ These are one of my favorite items in the realm of ways to scent a home! Just plug in it, turn it on with the convenient little switch, toss a little tart in it, and begin to enjoy amazing fragrance! Could it be any easier? :)

History of Candles

Since we make handpoured candles I thought I'd share with everyone the history of candles.

Candles have come a long way since their earliest known times from around the fourth century B.C. At one time, candles were one of the only sources of artificial light. The early Egyptians used rushes soaked in tallow (animal fat) and called them rushlights. During the time of the Roman Empire tallow was melted until it was liquid then poured over fibers of hemp or flax. The Chinese and Japanese made candles by using wax derived from insects and seeds and molded them in paper tubes. In India, taper candles were made from skimming wax off of boiling cinnamon. Beeswax candles came along in the Middle Ages, but quanities were limited, making it too expensive for anyone but the upper class.

Candle making, as we know it, made it`s debut during the thirteenth century when chandlers (candle makers) traveled door to door creating candles with the customer`s tallow or beeswax. In America, Native Americans made their first candles by using oily fish on a forked stick. Early missionaries would get their wax by boiling the bark of the Cerio tree. Early settlers of colonial America discovered that they could boil the berries from the bayberry shrub and create a wonderful smelling, good burning candle. Unfortunately, the process to make this wax was extremely tiresome and tedious. During the 19th century the first patented candle making machines were created. This allowed all homes, no matter what class, to have them.

No longer do we use candles as a primary source of light, but they`re still a very important part of our lives. We use them for many of our ceremonies, as decorations for our homes, to scent our homes, and to create warm glows in our homes during special, or romantic, occasions. What would romance be without candle light?

Dear Local Customers,

The Decorators Attic is a fantastic place to shop for items for the home, as well as for gifts. Donna (the owner) has the BEST prices I've ever seen in a shop of this kind. Cindi and I were truly impressed, both with the prices AND with the items there. There are all sorts of antiques, unusual items for the home, dining tables with chairs, beds, paintings, wreaths, decorative bowls, lamps and soooooo much more. There's no way I could possibly remember it all, much less list it here. And as an added bonus... the owner, Donna, is one of the sweetest people you could ever hope to meet. When you go by there... do tell Donna that Kapeli Candles sent ya over :)

A Happy Thanksgiving?

Well, I don't know about all of you..... but I am stuffed! What could be better than turkey and dressing and good ole cranberry sauce??? Then some good ole pumpkin pie!!!!!! Whewww! Time now to sit back and watch tv before drifting off to bed :)

I gotta admit though..... I did go on out to the cottage and work some today. Yeppers.... I just felt the need to work on a few more Christmas items for the Christmas Bazaar we're doing in Byron, GA on Dec. 2nd. All of you that are local.... stop on by and see us! We'll be bringing as much of our inventory as we're able to and we'd love to show it to ya! :) We'll have Christmas one of a kinds, our regular jars filled with Christmas fragrances and year round favs, tarts of all kinds, tart burners, Christmas gift baskets and regular gift baskets. November - The Holidays are upon us!

It's that time of year... "the Holiday Season". Is it just me, or does it seem like just yesterday it was the middle of July and HOT? Where does the time go? Well, where ever it's going.... it's getting there fast!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful Pre-Christmas/Holiday Season so far! At Kapeli we've been busy! We've been working on getting everything possible up on the new site, working on special Christmas baskets, candles and more. We've also been working on a new catalog for those that would like to have "catalog parties". Email us at candles@kcandles.com if you'd be interested in having one yourself :)

Our newest scent is Bayberry! It's a perfect Christmas scent, with it's berry and woodsy fragrance, but it's also a good one most any time of the year.
The settlers of colonial America used the berries from the bayberry shrub to make their candles! You know it's a good fragrance to have been around that long!
